First In, First Out: The Simple Rule That Keeps Your Pantry Organized

First in, first out (FIFO) means new stock goes behind older stock, and you cook or shop around what expires first. It is the simple rule that stops food dying at the back of the cupboard.

Physical FIFO

  • When you unpack shopping, put the new pack behind the older one of the same item.
  • Face labels out so dates are easy to scan.
  • Move soon-to-expire items to a “use first” shelf or bin.

Digital FIFO

Physical rotation fails when you buy on sale and forget what is already there. Add expiry dates to pantry items and sort the list by date. That is digital FIFO: the inventory tells you what to cook before you open the door.

In NoWaste, Free lets you store dates and sort or filter by expiry. Expiry reminders before food goes off are Pro only. More detail is in reduce food waste with expiry tracking.

The stockpile trap

Sale packs feel like a win until three of the same sauce sit behind one another. FIFO plus a pantry list makes stockpiling safer: you see duplicates before you buy again, and you know which pack to open first.

Make it a weekly habit

Once a week, sort by expiry, pull forward what needs using, and plan one or two meals around those items-see the 10-minute weekly kitchen reset. For wider kitchen memory habits, read memory aids that actually work.
